Working Professionals

Vocational integration of the Blind and Visually Impaired is an important social responsibility concerning all of society. In many countries therefore numerous funding systems are in place to provide access to work for people with impairments. In Germany, funding can be provided by the “Agentur für Arbeit”, the "Rentenversicherungsträger" or "Integrationsämter". The support is directed at either employees with impairment or their employers. The costs of technical aids can be covered fully by the funding organization (Agentur für Arbeit or Rentenversicherung). The scopes of services comprise a fully accessible workstation, initial procurement, replacement of broken equipment, maintenance and repairs.

In Austria assistive technology is funded by the Bundessozialamt.

In the UK every employer is responsible to avoid a disabled employee being put at a disadvantage compared to non-disabled colleagues. Employers and employees can seek funding from the government’s Access to Work scheme.

As an employer or employee in France a good starting point, when you are looking for funding, would be to contact your local department for people with disabilities (maison départementale des personnes handicapées (MDPH)) or the foundation for vocational integration, called A.G.E.F.I.P.H. (Fonds pour l’Insertion Professionnelle des Personnes Handicapées).

The responsibility for assistive devices at work and/or converting the workplace in Sweden is shared between the Social Insurance Office and the Swedish Employment Agency. In order to reach a decision on the application, also the services of rehabilitation and assistive technology specialists will often be engaged.

In Finland the Social Insurance Institution, Kela holds the responsibility of vocational and medical rehabilitation.

Many countries do have a national information system where people with disabilities can find important information on almost every aspect of their life, including information on the respective national funding system.
